About Capoeira

Capoeira is arguably one of the most multifaceted martial arts. More than a fight form, more than a way to keep fit and build strength, it’s about being part of a community of diverse people.

This 400-year-old martial arts form is a unique combination of movement, music and history.  Capoeira is associated with improving brain and body development. The circular, flowing and inverted movements train the areas of the brain associated with the vestibular system (balance), the cerebellum, eye tracking, midline crossing and proprioception. All these areas have a direct effect on focus, cognitive and motor function. The movements and sequences not only give the body and lungs a great workout but provide opportunities for creativity and play.

It is important to note that self defense is certainly a byproduct of capoeira. We say ‘byproduct’, because the movement aspect is the initial experience and then over time, and with greater understanding, the self-defense aspect naturally emerges. This evolves from the training in a powerful yet somewhat mysterious way. The essence of capoeira is difficult to explain accurately through words; it has to be experienced, and felt firsthand in the capoeira ‘roda’ (Capoeira sparring ring)

Capoeira is truly a democratic sport – for young and old, and all body types, allowing everyone to keep growing and refining as they progress along the journey. The path of capoeira is never ending, personal and utterly fulfilling – one in which your growth manifests in body, spirit and character.
